Marine and coastal management officials have arrested 27 Mozambican nationals caught fishing in the Maputaland marine protected area.
Officers swooped on two fishing vessels spotted in the protected waters off the Maputland coast and found the crew members had already landed about 650 protected fish.
The fishing boats - the Belmia and Barracuda - were towed to a nearby port under the watchful eye of the South African Police Borderline Unit.
The Water and Environmental Affairs Department’s Zolile Nqayi said the arrested crew members would face charges.
