This is where you touch me. I'm glad someone is raising this because this is a serious issue and needs urgent attention. I am not someone who likes her name to be published but I would like ukubeka umbono wami and remain anonymous.
Firstly the LM (uMhlabuyalingana) have the budget in their IDP for waste management. I believe they also have the facilities to perform this. I happen to be amongst the team in 2005 who was auditing the Municipalities for the Cleanest Town Competition hosted by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) National and the KZN Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs (DAEA) where our LM entered a competition. I was so disappointed when we visited the site after what we have read on the proposal. Unfortunately no one from the Department took action on that lie. Just to put you in the picture, the municipality reported that they have a fenced disposal site, they collect waste from Town every morning, waste is being managed according to the standards of Waste Management Act. When we arrived at the site the technical guy (whom most of us know) started mumbling saying the communities around have stolen the fence which was a blunt lie. When you driving to the site you start seeing waste maybe 5 km to the site which is not allowed. In June I tried to talk to the Pastors around Manguzi and see if they can do something but I guess with me not staying at home its not easy to coordinate things. We must also understand that there are legal implications about this. The municipality have By Laws on this.
I don't have a concrete solution yet but I have a suggestion. I want to look at this on the danger of scavenging in the dumping site than the people getting food, As you mention shops like BOXER, SPAR throw ukudla okubolile which can cause people to get ill. Our own hospital, WHERE DO THEY THROW THEIR WASTE, NEEDLES, PADS you name it. People go there and scavenge some of them bangahlatshwa yinaliti and get infected with HIV and AIDS. What are we doing as people who are now informed. I think our entry point will be to contact the office of DAEA - Waste Management Section for the uMkhanyakude DM at Mtuba to come and do the inspection. Maybe just maybe our LM will get a wake up call. Remember we don't want to destroy our municipality but we just want to live in a Healthy Environment. Failing that we can also go to DEAT national. Lets check the relevant legislation so that we will have something to refer to. I am willing to help provided that someone is driving this.
I hope this will help.
